SubPair FAQ and keyboard shortcuts

Short answers about where SubPair works, what the free plan includes, what Pro costs, what data is sent, and which keys do what. For step-by-step setup, see the guides for Netflix, YouTube and Disney+.

What is SubPair?

SubPair is a Chrome extension that shows two subtitle lines at once on Netflix, YouTube and Disney+: the original and a translation in your language. Click any word for its meaning, save words and phrases, and review them later. The free plan includes unlimited dual subtitles from each platform’s own subtitle tracks; Pro costs $4.99 a month or $39 a year.

Sites, browsers and devices

Which streaming sites does SubPair work on?

Netflix, YouTube and Disney+, on their websites. Amazon Prime Video, Max, Hulu and other services are not supported.

Which browsers and devices are supported?

Desktop Google Chrome on Windows, macOS, Linux and ChromeOS. SubPair doesn't run on phones, tablets, smart TVs or streaming apps, and there is no Firefox or Safari version.

Where does the second subtitle line come from?

On Netflix and YouTube, from the platform's own subtitle or caption track in your language, lined up by time, whenever the title has one. Missing lines and languages are filled by auto-translation. On Disney+ every second line is auto-translated as it appears.

Which languages can I use?

32 subtitle languages, in any pair: English, Turkish, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Japanese, Korean, Chinese (Simplified), Arabic, Hindi, Dutch, Polish, Swedish, Greek, Czech, Romanian, Hungarian, Danish, Finnish, Norwegian, Serbian, Lithuanian, Latvian, Estonian, Thai, Vietnamese, Indonesian, Georgian and Azerbaijani. The extension's interface is available in 11 languages.

Is SubPair made by Netflix, YouTube or Disney?

No. SubPair is an independent product, not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by Netflix, Google/YouTube or Disney. You need your own subscription; SubPair doesn't provide or unlock any video.

Free plan and Pro

Is SubPair free?

Yes. The free plan has no time limit and needs no account: unlimited dual subtitles from the platform's own tracks, 100 auto-translated lines a day, the click-word dictionary (up to 300 look-ups a day, which don't use up the lines), unlimited saving, review, transcript, and CSV and SRT export.

What counts toward the 100 lines a day?

Only lines that are auto-translated for you. Lines taken from Netflix's or YouTube's own subtitles don't count, and neither does a line SubPair has already translated into the same language. When the allowance is used up, the original line stays on screen and the side panel says so; it resets the next day.

What does Pro add, and what does it cost?

Pro costs $4.99 a month or $39 a year. It adds unlimited auto-translation, more appearance settings (a separate size, color and shadow for each line, plus box style and background) and Anki export with scene context.

How do I cancel Pro?

Open your account page on the website, choose Manage billing and cancel in the billing portal. Pro stays active until the end of the period you paid for, then your account returns to the free plan and your saved words are kept.

Do I need an account?

No. An account is only needed to sync your saved words and learning progress across devices, and for Pro. You can sign in with email or with Google.

Privacy and data

Does SubPair send subtitles to a server?

Only for auto-translation, and only after you agree. Subtitles from the platform's own tracks are lined up inside your browser and never leave it. You can switch auto-translation off in the subtitle settings at any time; dual subtitles from the platform's own tracks keep working.

Does SubPair track what I watch?

No viewing history is collected. When a line is sent for auto-translation, a short diagnostic record of that request, including the title and one sample line, is kept for 30 days to fix bad translations. SubPair doesn't sell data or show ads. Details are in the privacy policy.

How do I delete my data?

Delete your account from the account page; your account, synced words, usage counters and diagnostic records are removed from the server right away. Words saved in the extension stay in your browser until you remove the extension or clear its data.

Keyboard shortcuts

Shortcuts work while a video plays and you are not typing in a text field. On a Mac, Alt is the Option key.
