Dual subtitles on Disney+

Disney+ shows one subtitle language at a time. SubPair, a Chrome extension, keeps the subtitle Disney+ shows and adds an auto-translated line in your language underneath. Here is how it works on Disney+, how to set it up and what the free plan covers.

Free plan, no account needed. Runs in desktop Chrome.

What is SubPair?

SubPair is a Chrome extension that shows two subtitle lines at once on Netflix, YouTube and Disney+: the original and a translation in your language. Click any word for its meaning, save words and phrases, and review them later. The free plan includes unlimited dual subtitles from each platform’s own subtitle tracks; Pro costs $4.99 a month or $39 a year.

How it works on Disney+: line by line

On Disney+, SubPair reads each subtitle line as Disney+ shows it and auto-translates it into your language. Both lines are drawn together, and Disney+’s own subtitle is hidden while SubPair draws them so nothing is shown twice. The side panel labels this mode Line by line.

This differs from Netflix and YouTube, where the second line usually comes from the platform’s own subtitle tracks and costs nothing. On Disney+, second lines are auto-translated and count toward the free daily allowance, except lines SubPair has already translated into the same language before, which are reused at no cost.

Set it up in five steps

  1. Install SubPair in desktop Google Chrome (Windows, macOS, Linux or ChromeOS).
  2. Open a title on the Disney+ website and press play.
  3. Turn on Disney+ subtitles in the language you want on top, using the player’s own subtitle menu.
  4. Click the SubPair icon in the Chrome toolbar and choose the language for the second line.
  5. Keep watching. Each line appears with its translation underneath, and the side panel marks the title Line by line.

What works on Disney+

  • Click any word for its meaning, or drag across several words to save a whole phrase.
  • Blur the translation until you have tried the line yourself (Alt+B).
  • Size, position and the original line are in the side panel’s subtitle settings, shared with Netflix and YouTube.
  • Saved words keep the line and the title they came from, and come back in the review.

Because Disney+ lines arrive one at a time, line navigation (A S D), sentence loop and auto-pause are not available there, and a saved word opens its title but can’t jump to the exact moment.

What’s free and what’s Pro
