Privacy policy
Last updated: October 31, 2026
This Privacy Policy explains what information SubPair ("we", "us") collects when you use the SubPair browser extension and the website at subpair.com ("the Service"), how we use it, and the choices you have. We have tried to write it in plain language, because that is how we would want to read it ourselves.
1. The short version
- We collect your account email (and name, if you provide one) when you create an account.
- When a subtitle line needs automatic translation, the subtitle text is sent to our server to be translated — only after you agree in the extension, and you can turn auto-translation off at any time. A word you click for its meaning is sent the same way. Subtitle text is dialogue from the show — it is not tied to your identity beyond what is needed to enforce plan limits.
- You can delete your account yourself from the account page; deletion is immediate.
- Words and phrases you save are your vocabulary; they are stored locally in your browser and, when you are signed in, synced to our server so they follow you across devices.
- We do not sell any data and we do not track what you watch when no automatic translation is involved. When a line or word is sent for automatic translation, we keep a short diagnostic record of that request for 30 days — which platform and title it was for, the watch-page address, the language pair and one sample line — so we can find and fix bad translations (section 2.5). Besides that, the only show information on our server is the title and scene time attached to words you choose to save and sync, plus daily learning totals (minutes watched with SubPair, words saved and reviewed).
- Payments are handled by Creem.io, our merchant of record. We never see or store your card details.
- Information the extension sends us is used only to provide and improve SubPair's single purpose — dual subtitles and the learning tools around them — in line with the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy and its Limited Use requirements.
2. Information we collect
2.1 Account information
If you create an account, we store your email address, a hashed version of your password (never the password itself), and the optional display name you choose. If you sign in with Google, Google shares your name and email address with us; we never receive your Google password.
If you join the launch waitlist on our website, we store only that email address and the date, and use it to send one email when SubPair is available on the Chrome Web Store. Write to us to be removed at any time.
2.2 Subtitle text sent for translation
SubPair's core feature uses each platform's own subtitle tracks (Netflix, and YouTube captions), aligned inside your browser — those lines never leave your device. When a line has no subtitle in your second language, the subtitle text is sent to our server to be automatically translated. On Disney+, SubPair runs in live mode, so every line it shows is automatically translated this way.
- Consent first. No subtitle text is sent for translation until you agree — either in the extension's onboarding step or, if you skipped onboarding, in a one-time notice shown in the player the first time a line would need automatic translation. Until you agree, those lines simply show the original text.
- Words you click. When you click a word (or select a phrase) to see its meaning, that word or phrase is sent to our server to be looked up. This happens only while auto-translation is on. If you have not answered the auto-translation question yet, the dictionary first tells you that the word will be sent to our server and asks you to choose Translate or Not now — nothing is sent until you choose Translate. If auto-translation is off, the dictionary shows a prompt to turn it on and nothing is sent.
- You can turn it off. Switch off Auto-translation (sent to SubPair servers) in the side panel's subtitle settings, or on Netflix in the in-player SubPair panel. From then on no subtitle text and no clicked word leaves your browser; dual subtitles from the platform's own tracks keep working, and you can still save words.
We count translated lines and word look-ups against your daily limits, and keep a short diagnostic record of each translation request for 30 days (section 2.5). We do not build a profile of what you watch, and we do not use this information for advertising.
2.3 Saved vocabulary
Words and phrases you choose to save, together with the sentence they appeared in, are stored locally in your browser's extension storage. Each saved item also keeps where it came from — the platform, the episode's title and ID, and the time in the episode — so you can jump back to the scene. If you are signed in, your vocabulary, your learning/known marks and your daily learning totals (minutes watched with SubPair, words saved, reviewed and marked known per day, last 90 days) are synced to your account so they are available on other devices and on your account page. Deleting a word or your account removes it from our server.
2.4 Usage counters
To enforce the free plan's daily limits, we keep two per-account counters for each day: how many subtitle lines were auto-translated (limit 100) and how many words were looked up (limit 300; look-ups never use up the 100 lines). If you use SubPair without an account, the same two daily counters are kept against a one-way, salted hash of your IP address — the IP itself is never stored — and they are deleted after two days. These are numbers, not the content of the lines or words. Translations are also kept in a shared cache keyed by the text itself, with no link to who asked for them, so a repeated line is not translated twice.
2.5 Diagnostic record of translation requests
Each time the extension sends subtitle text or a clicked word for automatic translation, our server keeps one short record of that request: the time; your account (or, without an account, the first characters of the one-way IP hash described above); the platform (Netflix, YouTube or Disney+), the title and ID of the episode or video and its watch-page address (without tracking parameters); the language pair; how many lines were sent and whether the translation worked; and the first line of the request with its translation. We use these records only to investigate and fix translation problems, and only we can see them. They are deleted automatically after 30 days, and immediately when you delete your account. Requests that are answered from the platform's own subtitles never reach our server, so they are not recorded.
2.6 Support messages
When you contact us through Help & support on the website or in the extension's side panel, we store your messages and our replies, the topic and subject you chose, and the email address of your account (or, without an account, the email address you enter, which we use only to reach you about that request). If you leave the technical details option switched on, the message also carries a short diagnostic note: where you wrote from (website or extension, and which page), your browser's user-agent string, the interface language, your plan, the extension version and, from the extension, the platform, title and watch-page address (without tracking parameters) of what you were watching and its last subtitle status. Switch the option off and none of that is attached. Only we can read support conversations; we use them only to answer you and fix the problem you reported. Without an account, a random access key stored in your browser lets you reopen the conversation; we keep only a one-way hash of that key.
Support conversations are kept until you delete your account (they are deleted with it). Conversations started without an account are deleted automatically 180 days after their last message.
2.7 What we do not collect
- We do not collect your viewing history on Netflix, YouTube, Disney+ or any other streaming service beyond the 30-day diagnostic record of automatic-translation requests described in section 2.5. The list of recently watched titles in the side panel stays in your browser and is never sent to us.
- We do not sell any data to anyone, ever.
- We do not run third-party advertising or advertising trackers on the Service.
- We do not access your Netflix account credentials.
3. How we use information
- To provide the Service: translating subtitle lines, syncing your vocabulary, and keeping your plan and limits consistent across devices.
- To process payments and manage subscriptions through Creem.io.
- To respond when you contact us for support, using the messages and optional technical details described in section 2.6.
- To protect the Service from abuse (for example, rate limiting).
3.1 Chrome Web Store User Data Policy — Limited Use
SubPair's use of information received from the SubPair extension adheres to the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. In particular:
- Single purpose. We use that information only to provide and improve the extension's single purpose: showing dual subtitles on Netflix, YouTube and Disney+, and the learning tools that go with them (word look-ups, saving, review and sync).
- No sale, no advertising. We do not sell it, and we do not use or transfer it for advertising — personalized, retargeted or interest-based — or to determine creditworthiness or for lending purposes.
- Transfers. We transfer it only to the service providers listed in section 6, only as needed to run that purpose, or where required by law.
- Human access. No person reads it, except: with your permission (for example, the support messages and optional technical details you send us, section 2.6); for security purposes such as investigating abuse; to comply with applicable law; and the diagnostic records described in section 2.5, which only we review, only to investigate and fix translation problems, and which are deleted after 30 days.
4. Payments
Paid subscriptions are processed by Creem.io, acting as merchant of record. When you upgrade, you are taken to a Creem checkout page; your payment details are entered there and handled under Creem's privacy policy. We receive confirmation of your subscription status (for example, "this account is Pro") but never your card number or billing credentials.
5. Where data lives and how long we keep it
Account data and synced vocabulary are stored on our server for as long as your account exists. Locally stored data (vocabulary, settings) stays in your browser and is removed when you uninstall the extension or clear extension data. You can delete your account yourself at any time from the account page; your account data — including synced vocabulary, usage counters, diagnostic records and support conversations — is then deleted from our server immediately, except where we are legally required to retain records (for example, payment records kept by Creem.io).
Diagnostic records of translation requests (section 2.5) are deleted after 30 days. Support conversations (section 2.6) are deleted with your account; those started without an account are deleted 180 days after their last message. Waitlist emails are deleted after the launch announcement is sent.
6. Sharing
We share data only with the service providers needed to run SubPair: our hosting provider, the automatic-translation provider that processes subtitle text, Google (only if you choose to sign in with Google), and Creem.io for payments. None of them are permitted to use your data for their own advertising purposes on our behalf. We do not sell or rent personal data.
7. Your rights
You can delete your account yourself at any time: sign in on the account page and use Danger zone → Delete account. Deletion is immediate and removes your account, plan, synced vocabulary, and usage counters from our server. You can also ask us at any time to access, correct, export, or delete the personal data we hold about you. Email us at enesgencad@gmail.com and we will respond as quickly as we can. If you are in the EU/EEA, UK, or a jurisdiction with similar data-protection laws, these rights are backed by law (including the right to lodge a complaint with your supervisory authority).
8. Children
The Service is not directed at children under 13 (or the minimum age in your jurisdiction), and we do not knowingly collect personal data from them.
9. Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we will update the date at the top of this page. For significant changes we will make the update visible on the website or in the extension.
